Jose Mournho has revealed that Manchester United are taking the Europa Cup seriously because it is another way of getting them into the UEFA Champions League.
The Red Devils finished disappointingly outside the top four last season and since the appointment of the Portuguese he has talked about the importance of winning the title and getting back into the Champions League.
However, he has had a torrid start to life at Old Trafford with United winning just one of the last seven games in all competitions and currently sits eighth on the premier league log.
Mourinho believes that the Europa League has an added incentive with qualification for the Champions League handed to winners of the competition.
“My opinions change because the rules change and the Europa League winner qualifies for the Champions League,” Mourinho told reporters.
“For the last couple of years the Europa League has new meaning for big teams. “I don’t change my opinion that big teams belong in the Champions League with the history, but the Europa League is a target because you can qualify for the Champions League.”
Manchester United play Fenerbahce on Thursday - they beat the Turkish side 4-1 at Old Trafford two weeks ago.
